The Central Oregon Chapter of OSU Master Gardeners™, in cooperation with the Oregon State University Extension Service, will present the annual Spring Gardening Seminar, online only.  

 

All classes are accessible via Zoom webinars.

 

Pre-registration and $5 payment per class are required.

 

You can register for one or multiple classes. Class are offered in the morning and afternoon.

After registration, you will receive a link to the online webinar by e-mail. If you cannot attend on the day of the webinar, the Zoom classes are recorded and can be viewed later. A few days after the online webinar is completed, each registered participant will receive an e-mail with a link to the recording.

Morning Series

April 5, 10 AM: High Desert Gardening Basics with Vickie Minor

Tired of battling the elements and watching your plants wilt in the Central Oregon climate?  Then this webinar is for you!  Whether you're new to the high desert and overwhelmed by the unique challenges, or a seasoned gardener looking to refine your techniques, join us to unlock the secrets of successful gardening in Central Oregon.  This session will not cover vegetables but it will get into proven strategies for growing trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals in our high desert climate.  We will share valuable information on why our area is so challenging and what you can do to make garden magic happen.  Discover which plants thrive in our challenging conditions and how to nurture them to their full potential, to create a beautiful and sustainable garden.  This webinar will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to create a thriving garden oasis in the heart of Central Oregon.  So don't let the desert discourage you – let's grow together!

 

April 12, 10 AM: Growing Herbs with Jan Even

​Herbs are a good “gateway” to growing your own food. They are easier to grow than vegetables and lend their flavors to foods in many forms, whether fresh, dried, frozen or in infusions. We will explore how to grow and how to use herbs.

 

April 19, 10 AM: Landscape Design with Chris Hart-Henderson

Landscape Design- Where to start? Steps to take whether hiring a professional or doing it yourself.

 

April 26, 10 AM: Ecological Landscaping with Amy Jo Detweiler

Learn how to garden in the face of increased drought, changing temperatures, and altered soils. Speaker will cover tips for water conservation, plant selection, reducing your carbon footprint and more.  

Afternoon Series

April 5, 1 PM: Backyard Birds in the Garden with Jen Lair

Your yard contains more than plants – it can host a whole ecosystem of creatures, including birds! Learn what birds are found in Central Oregon, how to identify and attract them to your yard. Learn how you tend you yard can influence the birds you see, as well as what you can add to increase bird activity and nesting. Once the birds are in your yard, learn about their fascinating behaviors, which explains why over 1/3 of Americans watch birds!

 

April 12, 1 PM: Water-wise Landscape with Pat Kolling & Chris Miao

Are you interested in saving water in your existing landscape? Learn from two experienced OSU certified Master Gardeners about what to do when undertaking a water conservation project.  Topics will include irrigation review and strategies, types of plant material to use to save water, plant care and maintenance and turf removal and replacement.

 

April 19, 1 PM: Cactus Gardening with Julie Lay

Ever curious about using cactus in cold weather climate landscaping?  It may be easier than you think!  In this session, Julie will lead you through many topics of growing cactus outdoors in cold weather climates including anatomy of cacti; types of cacti appropriate for climate zones 4-6; soil requirements; watering; growing cacti from cuttings vs. established (rooted) plants; garden pests specific to cactus; flowers, fruit, & pruning; and placement of cacti in xeriscape landscapes.

 

April 26, 1 PM: Plant for Pollinator Success with Toni Stephan

As we see decline in habitat and floral resources for pollinators, studies have shown the importance of gardens to the success of pollinators and other insects. This class will help the gardener identify trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals that are important for pollinator success. It will also identify some gardening techniques that will help maintain pollinator populations in your garden and landscape.
